Plastic Waste Types

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

Found in water and soft drink bottles, food containers. Highly recyclable and commonly repurposed into clothing or new containers.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)

Used in milk jugs, detergent bottles, shampoo containers. Durable and widely recycled.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

Used in pipes, window frames, and some food wraps. Harder to recycle due to chemical composition.

LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)

Used for plastic bags, six-pack rings, and squeeze bottles. Not often recycled via curbside programs.

PP (Polypropylene)

Used in straws, bottle caps, yogurt containers. Increasingly accepted in recycling programs.

PS (Polystyrene or Styrofoam)

Used in disposable coffee cups, plastic food boxes, and packing materials. Difficult to recycle and often not accepted.

Other (Mixed Plastics)

Includes acrylic, nylon, polycarbonate (e.g., CDs, glasses lenses). Rarely recyclable and often ends up as landfill.

Plastic Packaging Film

Wraps for products, snacks, and shipping — often not accepted in curbside recycling.

Disposable Cutlery & Plates

Single-use plastics that are rarely recyclable due to food contamination and material type.

Microplastics

Tiny plastic particles from clothing fibers, cosmetics, and degraded larger plastics — dangerous to marine life and not recyclable.
